Not sure what type of treatment you need? Not to worry.
The first time I see you I will spend between 1 ½ and 2 hours taking your case history.
You will receive treatment in this session, but most of this time will be spent making a Traditional Diagnosis. This involves asking detailed questions about your symptoms, current and past health, including factors such as sleeping patterns, appetite, digestion and emotional wellbeing. I will also take your pulses and look at your tongue.
Acupuncture -
As an Acupuncturist I insert very fine needles at precisely located points to connect with your body’s qi. I will decide which points are right for you after a detailed consultation covering every aspect of your health and lifestyle. The aim is to direct the flow of qi to trigger your body’s healing response and to restore physical, emotional and mental equilibrium. Treatment is designed to affect your whole being as well as your symptoms so, as the condition being treated improves, you may notice other health problems resolve and an increased feeling of wellbeing.
Many of my patients report that the effects of acupuncture are far greater than they anticipated and like to include a regular monthly acupuncture treatment in their overall plan for personal self care and preventative medicine.
Please follow this link to the British Acupuncture Council website for information and research evidence on the many conditions that acupuncture can treat.
What to Expect:
One to one care in a calm space to relax and review your medical history and personal history, so that together we can identify likely causes and how best to help you.
A full Chinese Medicine based diagnosis of your health and how it relates to you.
A unique treatment plan, tailored at every treatment to how you are; I will take information from your pulse and tongue at each treatment.
Diet and lifestyle advice based on your diagnosis.
Self support advice based on Energy, Qi Gong, Pilates, stretching, self massage and acupressure. I may refer you to other trusted therapists if appropriate, like an osteopath, chiropractor or reflexologist.
Ear Candling -
In simple terms the candles work in a similar way to a chimney, i.e. the candle is lit and the impurities are drawn to the surface by the airflow circulating in, around and out of the top of the candle. This process is known as convection. A mild suction occurs and the heat is released circulating vapours inside the ear, gently massaging the eardrum (tympanic membrane). The action helps to regulate the pressure systems within the head including the sinuses.
A treatment (including facial massage) lasts approx. 40 minutes.
Conditions where treatment may be beneficial:
Excessive compacted wax (colds/flu)
Rhinitis
Headaches/migraines
Tinnitus
Vertigo
Frequent Air Travel
Swimming or people who partake in
scuba diving or water sports
Cupping -
Cupping has become increasingly popular in recent years. At the last Olympic Games, many observers noticed some bruise-like marks on some of the athletes, noticeably the swimmers, which were actually caused by cupping.
Cupping is an age-old technique used in traditional Chinese medicine to stimulate acupuncture points or larger areas of the body. Cupping is mainly used for muscle aches and pains, and general stiffness by boosting circulation. Some practitioners use it for things like headaches, and it can even be used on the abdomen and legs. The treatment is regularly practiced alongside acupuncture.
I practice fire, suction and sliding cupping depending on the condition and treatment required.
Love Cupping -
With the same health benefits as Traditional Cupping, my new Love Cups are perfect if you’re caught needing a quick treatment while on holiday…
The heart shaped cups are uniquely designed to leave a distinctive afterglow. Cupping therapy and fun in one cup!
Moxibustion -
Moxibustion is an essential part of Chinese medicine which uses moxa, a soft woolly substance prepared from mugwort leaves (Artemisia vulgaris). In moxibustion the moxa is placed either directly on the skin or held just above it, over specific acupuncture points or meridians. The herb is lit and as it smoulders slowly, a therapeutic heat permeates the skin and affects the flow of "Qi" (energy) and blood in the area being treated.
Direct moxibustion is more commonly used for specific areas needing treatment. I shape the moxa into a tiny cone and place it directly on to the body before lighting. The lit moxa cone is quickly removed as soon as the patient feels any sensation of heat.
Specific health benefits of Moxibustion can include:
Stimulating circulation and improving the flow of Qi
Expelling cold and dampness from the body (“warming the meridians”) to relieve back pain and pain from arthritis and menstrual camping
Improving female health issues such as menstrual irregularity, infertility, and breech pregnancy
Increasing resistance to cold and flu; this is especially helpful for patients who tend to frequently suffer from contagious viruses that circulate in winter
Regulating the digestive system to relieve constipation and chronic diarrhea
Facial Cosmetic Acupuncture -
The main benefit of facial acupuncture is to stimulate blood circulation and collagen production in the dermis layer of the face, which can have an anti-aging effect. Rather than creating stagnation by paralysing the area (like botox), acupuncture encourages cellular repair caused by the micro trauma of the needle and so increases circulation, whilst activating your body’s natural healing response. A course of treatment is recommended.
Women’s Health -
As women age from puberty through to post menopause the internal environment of our body changes too. Hormones fluctuate, blood is lost and replenished, babies are grown and nourished, all from a woman’s amazing body.
Acupuncture provides a holistic way to maintain homeostasis during the constant internal fluctuation of a woman’s body through the years. Each treatment is tailor-made to the individual woman and where she is in her life and the problems she is experiencing.
I am seeing more young women seeking treatment, from peri-puberty onwards, with issues like PMS, irregular periods, and headaches.
Western medicine has a tendency to medicate these young women with the pill, or other drugs that alter the menstual cycle. As a Chinese Medicine practitioner, it is understood that this transition period from 7-14 yrs and 14-21 yrs is a pivotal time in female development and longterm health, and we need to nourish and nurture during this time, not suppress or alter.
Often mothers have experienced similar issues themselves, and are keen for their daughters to have a more holistic treatment plan. Gynaecological issues usually take time to resolve, and at the start it is advised that regular weekly treatments are necessary to be most effective. When I treat a woman there is a different treatment plan for each week of the month, broadly speaking, after a period we usually Nourish Blood, whereas before the period we would Move Blood, different acupoints are utilised with the aim of guiding the body to gently rebalance itself.
Patients under 16 years of age are to be accompanied by an adult.
Women’s health issues can include:
Problem periods, irregular, painful, heavy flow, no periods, fibroids, PMS, infertility, IVF support.
Peri-menopause and Menopausal symptoms of hot flushes , night sweats, fatigue, brain fog, memory loss, anxiety and overwhelm, irritability, aching muscles, joint pain, skin issues, IBS, constipation or diarrhoea, pelvic pain, Lichen Sclerosis, vulvodynia.
I have increased my knowledge base over the years with further specialist Chinese Medicine training in Gynaecology, Infertility and the auto immune condition Lichen Sclerosis.
I am currently investigating how TCM can be of help to women experiencing lesser discussed issues like LS, vulvodynia, pelvic pain and chronic UTI’s.
So far Western medicine has little to offer in this department, but in my opinion Acupuncture with a sympathetic practitioner can do a lot to relieve the stress and isolation felt by many women who are struggling to manage their symptoms alone, and are told by their GP to carry on as best they can.
1:1 Pilates in person/online via Zoom -
Pilates is a focussed form of exercise for your mind and body that will improve your strength, flexibility and overall mobility. It helps restore your body to balance.
As a result your posture will change and you will move more efficiently. Through regular Pilates you can achieve a strong core, develop longer, leaner muscles and improve your overall sense of well-being.
Based upon an anatomical understanding of the body’s muscular and skeletal systems the Pilates teacher creates a comprehensive exercise programme for the client.
In a 1:1 class, it is tailor made to the needs of the client and their body; using exercises to redress the balance between over and under used muscles, identifying and realigning poor postural habits which go on to impact on muscle tone, torsion or weakness, creating dysfunction and pain. The aim is to re-educate and restore the whole body to its optimum muscular and skeletal function.
It is this holistic approach that sets Pilates apart from other forms of exercise and why GP’s, physiotherapists and other health professionals recommend Pilates as one of the safest forms of exercise today.
“If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young” - Joseph Pilates
Qi Gong on the Beach -
On Tuesday mornings I welcome residents and visitors of Mallorca to my relaxing Qi Gong class for beginners.
Through clear and easy to follow patterns of movement Qi Gong connects acupoints to each other, promoting the correct flow of Qi, this can help the body engage its own healing process, by reducing the stagnation of Qi. The literal translation of Qi Gong is “to work with Qi.”
Join us under the pine trees on Llenaire beach, opposite Swing Restaurant (Port de Pollenca) for this gentle exercise session. It really is the most perfect place to practice Qi Gong, with the rhythmic lapping of the waves, facing the fabulous view of the Bay, surrounded by the iconic pines and connecting to the heavens above and the Earth below. To practice here gives you a real connection to nature and the Universe.
If you would like to attend a class, please pop me a message before hand to let me know, as sometimes it can be weather permitting!
Post Treatment…
Most people find acupuncture relaxing and often feel very calm after a treatment. Some people can feel tired or a little sleepy, therefore it is best to take it easy after treatment and avoid doing anything too demanding. Advice may be given regarding lifestyle and healthy eating, and where appropriate I may suggest or refer you to another healthcare practitioner for specialist advice, for example an Osteopath or Chiropractor.
Please do call me if you have any questions, or if you would like to talk through any worries or concerns you may have regarding acupuncture, prior to making an appointment.
